Raise Your Hand in Support of Protecting Drivers in Your State

As a driver, I am aware of the risks that I am taking, but we’ve built a society around the use of an automobile. I purchase insurance to help me if I was ever to need it, but I am also aware of the inability of our current insurance system in properly, or even adequately, handling catastrophic injury as related to automobile accidents. As a citizen, I believe we deserve better and therefore I support the adoption of the Michigan Model for no-fault automobile insurance.

Michigan has the finest model in America for the care, recovery and rehabilitation of catastrophic injuries. The system provides unlimited medical benefits, for life, at no additional cost to the state. As a matter of fact, the Michigan model will reduce our state’s Medicaid costs by as much as a billion dollars over the next decade; all while creating thousands of jobs. Michigan has some of the best facilities, largely due to this system, and people actually move there to get medical services.

How Michigan’s no-fault works is rather simple. Drivers pay into a catastrophic claims fund, which reimburses insurers for costs beyond a certain threshold. This prevents insurers from being exposed to the potential “unlimited risk” for unlimited benefits, and allows them to charge a reasonable price. Because no-fault in Michigan pays for medical benefits, an injured person does not have to use up their health insurance, which they may need later in life. This helps prevent Michigan citizens from encountering bankruptcy due to medical bills, which is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States.

Michigan’s system of no-fault automobile insurance has been serving their state successfully for over 40 years and I believe that our state deserves the same. Our state needs to step up to this superior level of care and assure that everyone who is catastrophically injured gets comprehensive care for the duration of their need.
